Treasury auctions and the dollar's hidden volatility points

Post by Amanhasnoname »

US Treasury auctions of notes and bonds happen on a regular schedule, and their results can move yields. A weak auction, with poor demand, pushes yields higher and can influence the dollar. A strong one does the opposite.

The effect on currencies is usually modest but can be meaningful when markets are sensitive to rates. The release of the results, shortly after 1:00 PM Eastern for many auctions, creates a minor volatility event.

For scalpers, these auctions are a lesser-known source of unexpected moves. A pair may jump at 1:00 PM with no obvious news on the calendar.

The auction schedule is published in advance. Cross-referencing it with price data shows whether USD pairs show a consistent reaction.

Typically the effect is small relative to major data, so the approach might be to note the time and be aware of the potential, not to avoid trading entirely.

If a pattern emerges in the data, for instance a notable reaction to the 10-year auction, include it in the calendar as a medium-risk event.
