GBP/JPY has a long reputation for wild swings. It combines the volatility of sterling with the sensitivity of the yen to risk sentiment, and the result is large ranges and sharp spikes, often with little warning.
Spreads are typically wider than on majors, and slippage is more common. A stop that looks safe on a chart can be breached by a quick spike that retraces immediately.
For scalpers, the temptation is the movement. A three pip target is reachable in seconds. But the cost per trade is high relative to that target, and the tail risk is larger than the average suggests.
Position size should be reduced compared with majors to keep dollar risk constant. A stop twice as wide with the same lot size means twice the risk.
Test the pair separately. Measure average spread, slippage, and the distribution of adverse excursions. Often, a strategy that works on EUR/USD does not translate directly.
If trading it, treat the pair as its own instrument with its own parameters.
