NZD/USD: the pair that sleeps and then jumps

Post by Amanhasnoname »

The New Zealand dollar has a small, relatively illiquid market. Activity is concentrated around the Asian morning and when New Zealand data arrives. Outside those hours, the pair can be quiet, with wide spreads.

When news or a large order appears, the thin market produces jumps. NZD/USD often reacts sharply to dairy auctions, Reserve Bank announcements, and risk shifts, and the move can overshoot in a market with limited depth.

For scalpers, the pair is tricky. Quiet periods look like opportunities for tight ranges, but the occasional jump makes stops dangerous.

Check spreads by hour. They tend to be best in the Asian morning and the London overlap, and worst at the end of the New York day.

Plan around the data calendar. New Zealand releases happen in the evening for US and European time zones, which means the trader must be awake for a low-liquidity window.

A cautious approach is to trade the pair only during its active hours, with sizes adjusted for the thin book.
