The "close all" button and the cost of closing everything at once

Post by Amanhasnoname »

In a hurry, the close-all function seems like a safety valve. It sends market orders for every open position at the same moment. In a fast or illiquid market, the cost can be high.

Each position pays the spread and may suffer slippage. If many positions are on correlated pairs, the combined order flow can move the price against the trader, although retail size is rarely enough to matter on majors.

The sequence may not be what the trader would prefer. Closing everything at once means no prioritization, so the most vulnerable position may not close first. During stress, the platform may process requests in order, and delays accumulate.

Another risk is the one-click accident. A button that closes everything should be protected with confirmation, or placed away from other controls.

A more controlled emergency routine closes the riskiest positions first, in order of exposure, and uses limit orders when time permits.

For automated systems, include a controlled flatten function with priority and logging.

How does the emergency exit routine work, and has it been tested in conditions resembling real stress?
