Python and the MT5 API: speed realities

Post by Amanhasnoname »

The MetaTrader5 Python package lets traders pull data and send orders from Python scripts. It is attractive for research and automation, but there are limits worth knowing.

The package communicates with the terminal through inter-process calls, so each request has overhead. Fetching ticks or rates is quick enough for many uses, but not optimized for ultra-low latency. Order sending is bound by the terminal's processing.

Python itself adds variability. Garbage collection pauses, the global interpreter lock, and heavy libraries can cause occasional delays of tens of milliseconds. For strategies reacting within a second, that is acceptable. For tick-level reactions measured in single-digit milliseconds, it is not.

Profile the script. Measure the time between receiving a tick and sending an order. Keep the hot path lean: avoid heavy computation, logging to disk, and unnecessary loops.

For heavier needs, consider moving the time-critical part into the terminal's native language, and use Python for analysis and supervision.

What is the measured loop time from tick to order in the Python setup?
