Some brokers offer FIX API access to retail or semi-professional clients. The protocol is the standard for institutional trading, with direct messaging, lower overhead, and richer order types.
Compared with the MetaTrader path, where orders go from the terminal through a bridge to the liquidity provider, FIX can cut latency and remove some intermediate processing. Typical gains might be tens of milliseconds, though results depend on the broker.
It also provides more control: order types like iceberg, time-in-force options, and detailed execution reports. Market data feeds may offer full depth and raw ticks.
The cost is complexity. Building a FIX client requires programming skill, careful handling of sessions, sequence numbers, and reconnects. Errors can be expensive. Some brokers demand minimum account sizes or volumes.
For scalpers with automated systems, FIX can improve the edge, but only if the strategy truly depends on speed, and if the extra latency from the bridge was a limiting factor.
Measure the current latency first, then decide whether the effort is worth the potential gain.
