Too many objects on the chart

Too many objects on the chart

Horizontal lines, text labels, trend lines, arrows, rectangles. Each is an object stored by the platform and redrawn when the chart updates.

A chart with a handful is fine. One with thousands, left over from months of annotations or generated by an indicator that never cleans up, becomes slow. Scrolling stutters, switching timeframes takes seconds, and ticks queue up.

Indicators that draw arrows or labels for every signal can accumulate tens of thousands of objects over a long history. Each tick triggers processing, and the cumulative cost grows.

The platform's object list shows what's there. Sorting by type or name reveals the culprit. Deleting the clutter often brings an immediate improvement.

Templates can carry the burden from chart to chart, so cleaning the template fixes all new charts.

For indicator developers and users, a check on how many objects an indicator creates, and whether it deletes old ones, helps predict trouble.

A lean chart is a fast chart. The urge to document every thought on the chart competes with the need for the platform to respond quickly.

Right now, how many objects does the main trading chart carry?

Charts can quickly become cluttered with lines, indicators, labels and other objects. Each one may have seemed useful when added, but together they can make it hard to see price clearly. For scalpers, who need to make quick decisions, a cluttered chart can slow reactions and cause confusion. Regularly reviewing and removing old lines and unused indicators keeps the chart focused. A simple rule is to keep only what directly supports the current strategy, and to delete levels once they are no longer relevant. Old lines from previous weeks are a common source of confusion.

When I checked my main chart a while back, I counted 143 objects, most of them horizontal lines from weeks earlier that I'd forgotten about. The platform got slower every time I switched timeframes, and I noticed my EA's tick handling lagging by a visible amount during busy moments. After I deleted everything older than three days, the chart loaded in about a third of the time.

What I do now is keep levels on a separate template. I draw the lines for the day in the morning, and at the end of the session I delete them or save them as a screenshot in my journal. The chart itself carries about a dozen objects at most, which is enough to see what matters.

There's a second benefit I didn't expect. With fewer lines, the levels I do keep actually stand out, and I stopped being tempted to trade at some old line that no longer meant anything.
