Stop fills vs entry fills on metals: how to compare them

Post by FXS London Scalper »

On gold and silver, stop losses often fill worse than entries. Measuring the difference on your own account is straightforward and tells you how much to budget.

Method:
  • Export deal history for a few months.
  • For market entries, compare fill with the requested price.
  • For stops, compare fill with the stop level.
  • Report averages and the worst 5%, separately for news minutes and normal minutes.
Why stops tend to be worse: a stop triggers when price is already moving against you, often in thin liquidity, while entries happen when you choose. On metals entries and stops can differ a lot on data.

A worked example of using the result: if stop slippage averages $0.20 and the stop is $3, each loss is about 1.07R. With 45% losers, that's 0.03R per trade off expectancy, which matters for a thin edge.

Silver often behaves worse than gold on this measure because liquidity is thinner. Your data will tell.

Has anyone compared this across brokers?
