Moving to breakeven too early guarantees a particular kind of frustration

A trade goes plus three pips and the stop moves to entry. It feels safe. Price dips back, touches entry and stops out at zero, or at a small loss after spread, then continues in the planned direction.

On a small target, the maths works against early protection. With a spread of one pip and ordinary noise of two or three pips, a stop at breakeven is inside the noise. It gets hit often, and the winners that would have run are lost.

The numbers can be tested. Take the last few hundred trades and replay them with and without the breakeven move. Many scalpers find that breakeven stops cut the win rate sharply while barely reducing the average loss.

Breakeven is also not free of cost. A stop-out at "zero" still pays the spread and the commission.

Some alternatives exist: moving the stop only when price has travelled a multiple of the spread, trailing at a distance based on recent noise, or taking partial profit and leaving the stop alone.

What did the replay show when breakeven moves were removed?
