Squawk services versus calendars: two kinds of lag

Post by Shadow Trader »

A squawk is a human voice reading headlines as they appear. A calendar is a table of scheduled events and their values. They have different speeds and different purposes, and mixing them up leads to poor expectations.

A squawk covers unscheduled news: a central banker's comment, a geopolitical headline, an unexpected announcement. It can be seconds ahead of a news site. A calendar can't help with anything outside the schedule, but it's the right place to see what is coming, what the forecast is and how the market rates the importance.

Both are slower than the machines. Price moves on a headline before a person finishes saying it, and a human voice has to listen, decide and speak.

The real value of a squawk is context and warning. A sudden burst of urgent headlines is a sign to step aside, even if the content of each headline can't be traded in time. It also explains moves that would otherwise look random, which stops the urge to find a pattern where there isn't one.

The cost is real as well. Services charge a monthly fee, and a constant stream of voices is a distraction for a scalper who needs to concentrate on one chart. Some traders switch it on only around scheduled high-impact events, and others only use it as a background alert.
