Wednesday morning oil inventories and what happens to CAD

Post by Shadow Trader »

Crude oil inventory data from the US comes out on Wednesdays, and the move in oil often spills into the Canadian dollar. USDCAD can react within seconds, though the connection is less mechanical than people assume.

The relationship between oil and CAD has weakened and strengthened over the years, depending on what else is driving the market. Some weeks, a surprise in inventories moves oil by one percent and USDCAD barely twitches. Other weeks, the pair follows in lockstep.

The reaction isn't simple either. A large build in inventories is bearish for oil, which should be negative for CAD, but if the dollar is moving on other data at the same time, the net effect on USDCAD can be unclear.

For scalping, the useful part is the timing. The release is scheduled, the volatility is predictable in timing even if not in direction, and the spreads on USDCAD and oil-linked instruments behave in a recognisable way around it.

Checking how USDCAD behaved on each of the last twenty or thirty Wednesdays, in the five minutes after the release, gives a clearer picture than any rule of thumb. Some find a reliable pattern. Others find nothing worth trading.

Treating it as a known volatility event, and not necessarily an opportunity, is a fair starting point.

Has the oil release produced a usable pattern in USDCAD, or just noise?
