Too many screens mean too little attention on any of them

Post by Shadow Trader »

Six charts, three currency pairs, a news feed, a calendar and a chat window. It looks like a trading desk. It works like a distraction machine.

Attention isn't divided evenly. It gets pulled toward whatever moves, flashes or beeps, and the setup that matters most can go unnoticed while the eyes are somewhere else. A spread blowing out on one pair, a position drifting past its stop on another, a message popping up in the corner, all of them compete for the same pair of eyes.

Research on multitasking keeps finding the same thing. Switching between tasks doesn't make anyone faster at either. It adds a small penalty for every switch, and the penalty piles up.

For scalping, the cost is concrete. A trade is a few minutes long, and a single missed glance at the wrong moment can turn a clean exit into a late one.

Plenty of consistent scalpers run a very small layout: one pair, one or two timeframes, and a calendar. The chat window is closed during the session. The phone is face down. The news feed is replaced by a list of scheduled events checked before the session starts.

A useful experiment is trading a week with one chart per pair and everything else hidden, then comparing the average hold time, the number of trades and the number of mistakes with a normal week. The results tend to be less dramatic than expected, and in a good way, with fewer trades and a higher average per trade.

The urge to add another screen usually comes from the same place as the urge to take another trade: a feeling that more information means more control.

How many charts does it really take to trade well, and how many just feel productive?
