Delta divergence on a thin pair is mostly noise, with one exception

Post by Shadow Trader »

Delta is the difference between volume traded at the ask and volume traded at the bid. Rising price with falling delta is called a divergence, and it usually gets read as a warning that buyers are running out of steam.

On liquid, exchange-traded instruments, that reading has some support. On thin spot pairs using synthetic or tick-based volume, it has very little. The volume figure isn't real, so the delta calculated from it isn't either. The indicator draws a neat histogram, but the bars are built from quote updates split into "up ticks" and "down ticks" by a guess.

The exception is when the data comes from a genuine source, such as futures volume on a related contract. Then a divergence carries some information, though still not much by itself and certainly not enough to trade alone.

Has delta divergence on a forex chart ever been worth acting on?
