Entering inside the candle versus waiting for the close

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Waiting for the candle to close sounds disciplined. Entering inside it sounds reckless. Neither is automatically right, and the cost of each is different from what most people assume.

Waiting for the close removes the false signals that reverse in the last seconds, and the signal you act on is the one you backtested. The price paid is a worse fill, often several pips on a fast one-minute bar, which on a scalp target of six pips is a large tax.

Entering inside the candle gets a better price but exposes the setup to wicks that would never have survived the close. On a pair like EURUSD a breakout bar that wicks through a level and closes back inside is common, and an early entry turns those into losers.

A middle path some traders use: enter on a close for continuation setups, where chasing is expensive, and enter early only for reversal-at-level setups, where the price is already near the invalidation point and waiting wastes the entire edge.

To check it, replay a hundred trades twice, once with fills at the open of the following bar and once with fills at the signal price, and compare expectancy. The gap is the true cost of patience.

Which of your setups genuinely need a closed candle, and which ones only feel safer with one?
