Pips only or money visible: which display makes better exits?

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Most platforms default to a floating profit in account currency. On a small account that number can be trivial; on a larger one, one scalp can swing by a month of grocery money in a minute. Either way, the figure attaches meaning that the chart does not.

A pips-only or R-multiple display strips that out. Plus 4 pips on a 3 pip stop is +1.3R no matter whether the lot size is 0.1 or 2.0. Decisions get anchored to the plan's logic, not to whatever the currency amount happens to represent in real life.

It is worth a proper comparison. Spend two weeks with the money column hidden, with the platform set to show pips only, or with a custom panel showing R. Keep the journal columns the same. Then look at: how often winners were cut short, how often stops were moved, and average hold time. If the pips-only group is cleaner, the money display was adding pressure.

One caution: the dollar figure still matters for risk sizing and for the daily limit. It can be checked at fixed points, such as before the session and after each closed trade, instead of staying in the corner of the eye all day.

Did hiding the currency figure change your exits, or did nothing move?
