Picture two traders running the same strategy on the same broker. One pays a premium for a VPS with eight cores and plenty of memory in a data centre two time zones from the broker's server. The other pays a quarter as much for a small machine in the same city as the broker's trade server. Over a month, the second trader has noticeably better fills, and nobody can work out why, because the first one's machine is far more powerful.
The explanation is simple. For scalping, the specs barely matter, because the strategy uses a sliver of the processor. What matters is the round-trip time between the VPS and the broker's trade server, and how steady that number is. A 3ms average with spikes to 80ms is worse than a steady 12ms for a lot of strategies.
Brokers host servers in a handful of data centres. London, New York, Tokyo and Singapore are common. A VPS in the same building can reach single-digit milliseconds. A VPS on the other side of an ocean can't beat about 70.
Finding the broker's server location isn't always straightforward. Some publish it. Others reveal it through the platform's ping display or a basic trace to the server address, where the route and delays hint at the destination city.
A home connection adds consumer-grade routing, Wi-Fi jitter and whatever the neighbours are streaming. A VPS removes those, which is the main benefit even when the ping isn't dramatically lower.
A few practical points. More than one VPS provider can sit in the same data centre with very different routing, so testing before paying for a year is sensible. The ping shown in the platform is a rough number, and a proper test logs it every few seconds for a full day. And the broker's server may be migrated without notice, so the check is worth repeating every few months.
None of this makes a trader faster than the market. It just removes avoidable delay.
What's the lowest and steadiest ping that has been achieved to a retail broker, and where does the VPS sit?
Where the VPS lives matters more than how fast it is
