Latency during news is not only about the connection. A terminal with a dozen charts open, several indicators recalculating and an EA running can fall behind when the tick flow jumps from a few per second to dozens. The chart repaints late, the order dialog hangs, and the click that felt instant gets sent half a second after the move.
Server-side queues matter too. Many brokers handle a flood of orders in sequence, so the same request that takes 80 milliseconds in calm conditions might take 500 or more at the print. Messages like "trade context busy" or a string of requotes are signs of that pressure, though the exact numbers depend heavily on the setup.
Things worth checking:
- Round-trip time from send to confirmation, logged at a quiet hour and again at a major release
- A VPS located near the broker's trade server compared with a home connection
- The effect of closing every chart and indicator that is not needed
The cleanest measurement is a minimum-size trade placed at release time on a few events, with timestamps for sending and for the fill. It costs a bit of spread, and it replaces guessing with an actual figure.
Better lag numbers will not fix a bad setup, but they remove a hidden cost from a good one.
What round-trip time do you log in calm conditions compared with a major release?
