A calendar release comes with a countdown. Spreads widen early, plenty of traders step aside, and stops are mostly out of the market. A central bank speaker going off script in a Q&A has none of that. Spread is tight right up to the instant of the comment, positions are all still open, and price can travel 15 to 20 pips on a major within seconds.
That makes the unscheduled version more dangerous in one specific way: the usual protective habits never activate. Nobody flattens ahead of a sentence nobody knew was coming.
The speech itself may be on the calendar, but its content is not. A short list of people actually matters at any given time, such as the chair and voting members of a rate committee, and their live interviews or Q&A sessions carry the risk. Prepared remarks tend to be priced in already.
Practical habits worth considering:
- Keep a live headline feed visible on a second screen
- Cut position size while a key speaker is in an open Q&A
- Never run a scalp without a hard stop in the market, because a mental stop is useless when the move takes 400 milliseconds
None of this removes the risk, it only shrinks the damage when a surprise lands.
How do you track speaker schedules, a calendar filter or a dedicated feed, and which has missed something you cared about?
Unscheduled headlines are worse than scheduled news
