Year-end liquidity and the strange last week of December

Post by Shadow Trader »

The period between Christmas and New Year is among the thinnest of the year. Many banks and funds close books early, desks are lightly staffed, and trading volumes fall by half or more.

Price behavior changes in several ways. Ranges narrow for days, then break sharply on small orders. Spreads widen during off-peak hours, and rollover is more severe than usual because of year-end funding demands.

Currency pairs sometimes show odd moves in the last days of the year, linked to balance sheet adjustments. Banks need to window-dress their balance sheets, and the demand for dollar funding rises. This can push cross-currency basis spreads wide and move spot rates a little.

For a scalper, the main risks are slippage and gaps in thin markets, and the false sense of calm in tight ranges.

The final trading day of the year and the first trading day of the new year are special. Many platforms have shortened hours, and some brokers close early on December 31 or open late on January 1.

Checking the broker's holiday schedule well ahead prevents surprises like an open position when trading is suspended, or margin requirements being raised.

How has the final week of the year behaved on your pairs in the past few years?

The final December week is thin enough that a single fund rebalancing can push EURUSD further than a normal data day. For a London scalper, the honest answer is usually a holiday, or at most a couple of mornings at quarter size.
