Rollover on thin pairs: the spread is only half the trouble

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Around 5 pm New York, liquidity drops as the trading day rolls. A spread of 0.6 pips on EURUSD can jump to 2.5 or more, and on thinner crosses it can reach 10 or beyond for a few minutes. Most scalpers know to stay out. Fewer realise how many open positions get hurt without any actual movement.

The mechanism is simple. A stop on a long trade triggers on the bid. When quotes thin and the bid drops by the widening of the spread, the stop is hit even though mid price has barely moved. The chart shows a downward spike and an immediate recovery. A position held through that window pays the cost of spread widening with no compensation.

Common mistakes include leaving tight stops on trades held from the New York afternoon, and running automated systems without a time filter. Even if the system itself is intraday, the extra cost on a few trades a month can erase a sizeable portion of profit.

A rule that costs nothing: flatten or widen stops ahead of the roll, and block new entries for a set window. Check the broker's own server clock, because it may not match New York time exactly.

How wide did the spread get on your worst cross during the roll, and did any stop get hit by it?
