Break structure for long sessions, borrowed from focus research

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Working in focused blocks with scheduled breaks improves sustained performance across many fields, and the same applies to trading. Ninety minutes of focus followed by a proper rest is a pattern that suits many people.

During a break, the best option is stepping away from all screens. Moving, eating, or just sitting quietly restores attention better than switching to a phone.

Breaks also provide a natural point to review. A quick check of the last block, the trades taken, and the state of mind helps decide whether to continue.

Setting a timer removes the temptation to push through. The urge to stay "just for one more setup" is strongest when things are going well or badly, which is precisely when a pause is most useful.

Experimenting with block lengths, such as 45, 60, or 90 minutes, and comparing results shows what suits the individual.

Experimenting with one change at a time, such as break length, makes it easier to see which adjustment actually moved the results.

What session structure works best, and how long are the breaks?
