Sizing positions for a three pip stop without lying to yourself

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Tiny stops allow large position sizes for a given risk. A 3 pip stop and a 1 percent risk on a 10,000 dollar account suggests a size of about 3.3 lots. The math works, but reality adds friction.

Slippage on a 3 pip stop can double the loss. A spread spike can trigger the stop without any real price movement. Both turn a planned 1 percent loss into 2 percent or more.

A buffer in sizing helps. Calculating the lot size for a 5 or 6 pip effective stop, even though the planned one is 3, accounts for typical execution friction.

Large sizes also worsen fills, especially on thinner pairs. Partial fills and price impact grow with size, which makes the real risk higher than the formula suggests.

Starting smaller than the maths allows and scaling up only after confirming execution quality is the cautious path.

What buffer is used in sizing for tiny stops, and has it been enough?
