Spread widening before news is an early warning most people ignore

Several minutes before a major release, spreads on the affected pairs often creep upward. Liquidity providers pull back, depth thins, and the quoted spread starts to reflect the uncertainty ahead.

That widening is information. If the spread on GBPUSD is 0.8 pips at 8:20 and 1.5 pips at 8:27 before a 8:30 release, the market is already pricing in the volatility. Trading through that window means paying more for entries and risking a gap in the exit.

It also works as a general stress gauge. A pair whose spread suddenly opens without any scheduled news might be reacting to a headline, a central bank source story, or a large order working through the book. The spread tells the story before the chart does.

A simple routine is keeping a spread monitor visible and treating any jump beyond double the normal level as a stop signal, whether or not a calendar event explains it.

What spread multiple triggers a pause in trading, and has an unexplained widening ever turned out to be a big story?
