Reading the tape in forex without a tape

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Equity traders watch time and sales. Forex has no consolidated tape, but a rough substitute can be built from tick direction and update speed.

Each tick that prints at a higher price than the last suggests buying pressure, and each lower tick suggests selling. Counting ups versus downs over the last 100 ticks gives a crude pressure reading. Combined with update rate, it shows whether a move is backed by activity or is just drifting.

It is imperfect. The ticks reflect the broker's aggregated quotes, not actual trades, and different feeds produce different counts. But within a single feed, the reading is consistent enough to offer an edge in timing entries.

A bullish tick imbalance during a pullback to support, for example, suggests buyers returning. A bearish imbalance as price grinds toward resistance suggests a failing push.

Building this into an indicator takes some work, and it needs testing, but it provides a view of order flow that candles hide.

Has tick direction been used as a pressure gauge, and how well did it hold up compared with plain candle reading?
