The London lunch lull is real and weirdly exploitable

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Around 11:30 am to 1:30 pm London time, European desks go quiet and volatility on EUR and GBP pairs often drops. Ranges shrink, movement becomes choppy, and trend setups tend to fail.

This is when mean reversion strategies often look best. Price drifts within a small band, small overshoots snap back, and fading extremes becomes more reliable than chasing them. The catch is that spreads do not shrink to match the smaller range, so the cost-to-move ratio can still be poor.

A second catch is the New York open at 1:30 pm London time for the 8:30 am data releases. The lull often ends abruptly, and a mean reversion position that was fine in a quiet hour can get run over by a fresh trend within minutes.

Some traders use the lull for review and journaling instead of trading, treating it as built-in quality time. Others trade a very specific, narrow setup in that window and stop before the New York pickup.

How is the London lunch window treated, as a trading opportunity or as downtime?
