One-minute bars hide what happens inside them. Looking at tick data shows that the first 10 to 15 seconds of a bar often contain a disproportionate share of the range, especially around scheduled releases and session opens.
Many news releases land exactly on the minute, so the first ticks of the bar carry the reaction. Algorithmic activity also tends to cluster at the start of intervals, as systems rebalance on timers.
For scalpers entering on a bar close, that timing matters. Entering at the open of a new bar means entering after the algos and data have already pushed price, sometimes at the worst moment.
A simple test is to measure the average range in the first 15 seconds versus the rest of the minute across different hours. The pattern may be clear enough to suggest waiting before entering new bars, or avoiding that window altogether.
Has the time-within-the-minute pattern been examined, and did the results change entry timing?
Intrabar movement in the first seconds of a minute tells a lot
