Leverage changes slippage sensitivity more than most people notice

High leverage lets a trader open large positions with small capital. The same leverage magnifies the effect of every pip of slippage and every spread widening on the account balance.

A 0.5 pip slippage on a 1 lot trade costs 5 dollars. On a 10 lot trade, it costs 50. With high leverage and large size, a single bad fill can take a sizeable bite out of the account.

Margin also shrinks the buffer. A position with high leverage leaves little room before a margin call, so a short-lived spike can force liquidation.

Lowering effective leverage by trading smaller positions relative to equity gives breathing room. Many experienced traders use a fraction of what the broker allows.

Looking at the ratio of position notional to equity, rather than the advertised leverage, is a more honest measure of exposure.

Writing the real exposure figure on a sticky note next to the screen keeps the broker's advertised maximum from quietly shaping sizing decisions.

What effective leverage is typically used, and how does it compare with the broker's maximum?
