Terminal logs hold clues most traders never read

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Every trading platform writes logs, and almost nobody opens them. They record connection events, order requests, rejections, and timing details that explain a lot of mysterious behaviour.

A journal entry showing an order sent at 14:32:05.120 and confirmed at 14:32:05.640 tells how long the broker took. A series of reconnect messages points to a flaky network. Repeated errors about history show the data feed struggling.

Reading them takes some patience, but patterns emerge fast. Frequent disconnects clustered at the same time each day might trace to a scheduled task on the machine or a router that reboots. Order timings that jump during specific hours might correlate with broker-side load.

Saving logs along with trade records builds a useful archive. When a dispute with the broker arises, timestamped logs are far stronger evidence than a memory of what happened.

Even a ten minute skim at the end of the week tends to turn up at least one pattern worth chasing down properly.

Has digging into logs ever solved a mystery about slow fills or disconnects?
