Losing days are not information about tomorrow

Post by Shadow Trader »

A losing day feels like a message. The market is different now, the system is broken, something has changed. The urge to adjust is strong.

Most of the time, a single losing day is just variance. A system with a 55 percent win rate and symmetrical payoffs will have losing days regularly. Losing streaks of five or six trades are normal for that kind of edge.

The error is treating each day as a new experiment and changing parameters afterward. That's a recipe for overfitting to noise. After a few weeks, the system has been altered so much that nobody knows how it would perform.

An approach that works better: set a review period in advance, for example 200 trades, and don't change rules in between except for clear execution errors. At the end, analyze the whole batch.

That doesn't mean ignoring real changes. A sudden jump in costs, a shift in broker execution, or a change in market structure matter. But they leave traces in data, such as higher slippage, wider spreads, or altered fill times, not just a bad P&L.

Checking those first is more productive than tweaking entries.

What evidence helps separate a bad day from a broken system?
