Wick length as a liquidity gauge

Wick length as a liquidity gauge

Long wicks on short-timeframe candles tell a story about liquidity. A candle with a 6 pip wick and a 1 pip body indicates that price went somewhere and came back, with little acceptance at the extreme.

Counting wicks over time gives a measure of market character. If the average wick-to-body ratio rises, the market is becoming more erratic, with quotes jumping and reversing. If it falls, price is moving more smoothly.

For scalpers, a high wick ratio means that stops and entries based on the close are less reliable. Moves are probing and retracing, and tight stops are vulnerable.

It also shows up around thin periods. Wicks lengthen in the Asian night, around rollover, and before holidays.

Some traders build a simple indicator: the average of the upper and lower wicks over the last 20 bars, divided by the average true range. Rising values mean the market is getting choppy.

It's a crude gauge. But it's easy to compute, it uses only price data, and it often warns of deteriorating conditions before the spread does.

What wick-to-range ratio marks the point where conditions turn choppy on the pairs followed here?
