AUDUSD at the London open: is it worth watching at all?

Post by FXS London Scalper »

AUDUSD is mostly an Asian session pair, and many London scalpers ignore it. It's worth checking whether that's right for you, by logging it at the open alongside EURUSD for a month.

What to compare:
  • Average range from 08:00 to 10:00 London, against EURUSD's.
  • How closely it follows the dollar side of EURUSD. If it mostly mirrors the dollar, it rarely offers a different trade.
  • What happens after strong Asian moves.
That last point is the interesting one. The hypothesis: Asian moves on thin liquidity get partly corrected when Europe arrives. To test it, take mornings where AUDUSD moved more than 50 pips in Asia, and check whether it retraced at least a third of the move by 10:00 London.

Be careful with the sample. Moves of that size don't happen every week, so a month gives a handful of cases. Even 8 out of 11 is only suggestive; the chance of 8 or more heads in 11 coin flips is about 11%. Watch for more examples before risking real size.

If the pattern holds, a fade setup with a stop beyond the Asian extreme is a natural way to trade it.
