The quiet cost of changing timeframes mid-trade

Post by Shadow Trader »

A trade is opened on the 1 minute chart. It goes against the position. The chart switches to 5 minutes, then 15, searching for a reason to hold.

This habit has a name in trading psychology: moving the goalposts. The original setup lived on a specific timeframe with specific rules. The moment the timeframe changes, the original stop and target become meaningless, since a larger timeframe offers a much more flattering story.

What typically follows is a stop that gets widened, a position held longer than planned and a small loss that becomes a large one.

The cure is boring but effective. Before entering, the journal records the timeframe, the stop, the target and the invalidation condition. Once the position is open, only those pre-written conditions matter. Switching timeframes is allowed for learning after the trade is closed, never for justifying a hold.

A screenshot taken at entry also helps, since it preserves the original context.

How often does this happen in the journal here, and what has helped break it?
