high leverage does not mean high risk

Post by Shadow Trader »

The belief: 1:500 leverage is dangerous and 1:30 is safe.

Leverage is the ceiling on position size per dollar of margin. Risk is what the trader chooses to place under that ceiling. Two accounts with $1,000 can both have 1:500 available. One opens 0.05 lots with a 20 pip stop, risking about $10 on EUR/USD. The other opens 1 lot with a 10 pip stop, risking about $100, which is 10% of the account. Same leverage, ten times the risk.

Flip it. A 1:30 account can still be blown by someone who pushes position size to the limit. Low leverage only forces the cap earlier, it does not make the choices.

Where leverage genuinely bites is the room it leaves. Higher leverage means more space to over-size before the platform says no. So it enables risk. It does not create it.

Position size and stop distance are the whole answer.

Does a higher leverage setting change the way you size, or does the stop always decide?
