A trader is in a 6-pip scalp on EUR/USD, quiet session, spread at 0.6. A headline flashes about an unexpected statement from a government official.
Within a second the spread is 3 pips. Within two, the quotes flicker. Price jumps 15 pips and the stop gets filled at 11 pips against the entry, far beyond the planned loss.
Nothing was scheduled. There was no calendar entry to avoid.
That's how unscheduled headlines work. Market makers can't price what they can't read, so they pull quotes until they know what's happening. The liquidity wasn't expensive. It was missing.
Afterwards the price often retraces part of the move as the first reaction proves to be an overreaction, though not always.
It happens more often in thin hours, so a stop at a round number sits in the worst spot.
Has an unscheduled headline ever filled your stop far from the level, and what was the worst slippage you saw?
a headline hits and the bid just disappears
