breakeven stops feel safe, but are they free?

Post by Shadow Trader »

The breakeven move is oversold. It feels like insurance, but it has a price, and the price shows up in the trades that would have worked.

On a 1-minute chart a normal pullback is often 1 to 2 pips, sometimes more. Move the stop to entry after +3 and that ordinary wobble tags the trade out at zero, usually a hair worse because of spread. Then price carries on to the target without you.

Run the logic the other way too. Some trades do reverse from +3 and go on to hit the full stop, and breakeven saves those. The question is which group is bigger in your own data. Memory won't answer it, because a missed winner stings and a saved loser is invisible.

There's also a quiet side effect. Scratches turn some winners into zeros, so win rate and average win both drop while the average loss stays the same. Expectancy can move either way, and only a log shows which.

Plenty of traders defend breakeven for peace of mind. Fair enough, as long as it's labelled as a comfort cost and not a free edge.

Has anyone logged the same setup with and without a breakeven move? What changed, and how many trades did it take before the difference was visible?
