Oil headlines and their knock-on effect on CAD and gold

Oil headlines (OPEC+ comments, supply disruptions, inventory surprises) can move USDCAD and sometimes gold within minutes. What to look for:

USDCAD
  • The reaction usually lags crude by 30 seconds to a couple of minutes.
  • Size is usually modest. Put a crude chart next to USDCAD for a few weeks and note how many pips a 2% crude move produces; that gives you a working ratio.
  • It fades faster if the dollar is moving for its own reasons.
Gold
  • Less direct. Supply shock headlines with geopolitical angles lift gold too, as a safe haven.
  • Pure inventory surprises have barely any effect on gold.
Timing
  • The weekly US crude inventory report (Wednesday 15:30 London time) is scheduled. Spreads on USDCAD widen a little around it.
  • Unscheduled headlines are the ones that catch you.
What I do: keep a crude chart open when trading USDCAD, and avoid new CAD entries within a few minutes of a big crude move until it settles.

Does anyone actively trade the oil-to-CAD lag? Or is it too unreliable to be a strategy?
