USDCAD
- The reaction usually lags crude by 30 seconds to a couple of minutes.
- Size is usually modest. Put a crude chart next to USDCAD for a few weeks and note how many pips a 2% crude move produces; that gives you a working ratio.
- It fades faster if the dollar is moving for its own reasons.
- Less direct. Supply shock headlines with geopolitical angles lift gold too, as a safe haven.
- Pure inventory surprises have barely any effect on gold.
- The weekly US crude inventory report (Wednesday 15:30 London time) is scheduled. Spreads on USDCAD widen a little around it.
- Unscheduled headlines are the ones that catch you.
Does anyone actively trade the oil-to-CAD lag? Or is it too unreliable to be a strategy?
