Pings, chimes and the Pavlov problem

Trading platforms come with sounds. A chime on fill. A buzz on alert. A tick on every price update, if enabled.

Those sounds condition behaviour. A positive chime after a win becomes rewarding in itself. A different tone after a stop-out becomes aversive. Over weeks, the trader starts reacting to sounds rather than to the market.

Some people find that they click faster when a particular alert sounds, even before reading what it says. Others feel a flash of stress at the stop-out tone and immediately look for a trade to fix it.

Switching sounds off, or replacing them with neutral ones, removes part of the conditioning. Visual alerts alone force a slightly slower, more deliberate reaction.

A related point: the constant flicker of price changes is itself a stimulus. Turning off the live tick display on the chart and relying on candle closes changes the experience noticeably.

Which platform sounds are active right now, and what does the mind do when they go off?
