Month-end flows and the strange hours of the last trading day

Post by Shadow Trader »

The last trading day of the month has its own personality. Large funds rebalance portfolios, hedge currency exposure, and shift positions to match benchmarks. Those flows can be one-directional and large, and they often arrive near the London 4pm fix.

A common story: if US equities rallied hard during the month, foreign investors holding US stocks have more dollar exposure than intended, so currency hedgers sell dollars at month-end to rebalance. If equities fell, the flow may go the other way. The logic is neat, and the real world is messier, but the idea has some support.

For a scalper, month-end means unusual price pushes without news. Technical levels can fail for no obvious reason because the flow doesn't care about support and resistance.

Some scalpers reduce size on the last day of the month, others step aside around the fix. A third group tracks the pattern in a journal and trades it selectively.

How is month-end handled? A normal day, or flagged with extra caution?
