Negative balance protection changes how a broker treats fast spikes

When negative balance protection is offered, the broker absorbs losses beyond the account balance. That sounds like a pure benefit to the client. It also gives the broker a reason to care about fast moves.

A broker that eats the shortfall on a gapping market has an incentive to widen spreads, raise margin requirements, or pause trading before the event. This is why leverage on majors sometimes drops from 500:1 to 50:1 an hour before a central bank decision.

For scalpers, the implications are mostly about timing. Positions open into those windows can find the margin requirement suddenly higher, and a trade that was safely sized at 12:00 becomes over-leveraged at 13:00 without any change by the trader.

Some brokers announce the changes. Some apply them automatically and the trader finds out through a rejected order or an unexpected margin call.

What helps is checking the broker's leverage policy page for scheduled changes, and checking the live margin figure in the platform right before an event instead of trusting the account's headline leverage.

Has the margin requirement ever changed on an open position without warning, and how did the platform report it?
