Boredom trading: the most expensive hobby on the desk

Post by Shadow Trader »

Scalping has long stretches of nothing. Price drifts, setups don't appear, and the mind starts looking for action. Then a mediocre signal shows up, and it gets taken because something needs to happen.

Boredom trades are rarely dramatic. They're small, frequent, and quietly corrosive. Each pays spread, each has below-average odds, and together they turn a decent day into a flat one.

Spotting them is straightforward in a journal. Tag trades taken without a full setup match and compare their results with the rest. The gap tends to be embarrassing.

Remedies range from simple to structural. A checklist that must be completed before entering. A timer that blocks the platform for ten minutes after each trade. A second activity during quiet periods, like reading or stretching, that gives the attention somewhere else to go.

Some desks keep a literal rule: no trade without writing the setup name first. The two seconds spent typing it are often enough to notice that the name doesn't exist.

What gets done during the dead stretches between setups?
