The pull of round numbers

Post by Shadow Trader »

Prices ending in 00 and 50 attract attention. Orders cluster there, options strikes sit there, and traders place stops just beyond them. As a result, price often stalls, reverses, or whips around these levels.

For scalpers, round numbers provide natural reference points. A target set just before 1.1000 avoids the risk of price turning at the level. A stop placed just beyond the number can get swept as price pokes through before reversing.

Some practical observations:

- The effect is stronger at the big figures, like 1.1000, than at the 50s, and weaker at the 20s and 80s.

- Price often overshoots by a few pips before reversing, so entries right at the level get tested.

- The pull strengthens when many pending orders are clustered, which can show on order book data some brokers provide.

- On pairs with fewer digits, like USDJPY, 150.00 plays the same role.

The honest caveat is that round numbers work until they don't. Plenty of times price slices through with barely a pause.
