Sydney open and the NZD, AUD pairs that wake up first

Post by Shadow Trader »

The week starts in Wellington and Sydney, and the first liquid moves often show up in NZD and AUD pairs before anything else. Weekend news hits first in thin conditions, and the first price action sets the early tone.

For scalpers, this window has charm and risk in equal measure. Charm: some of the cleanest Asian session ranges appear in AUDNZD or NZDUSD. Risk: spreads are wide in the first hour, and liquidity is thin, so stops slip.

A pattern some observe: during the Sydney session, AUD and NZD pairs trend gently or range quietly, and then Tokyo adds volume and sometimes reverses the early direction. Not reliable, but worth tracking.

There's also a data angle. Australian and New Zealand economic releases come out during Asian hours, often at 9:30 Sydney time or 10pm GMT the evening before. Those releases move the pairs sharply, with little warning if the calendar isn't checked.

A scalper in Europe or the Americas who stays up for Sydney is usually trading tired. Fatigue costs more than any edge the early window offers.

Is the Sydney open a regular part of the schedule, or left to people in that timezone?
