Choppy markets are the scalper's silent enemy. Price moves enough to trigger entries and stops but not enough to reach targets. The losses are small and frequent, and by the time they add up, the damage is done.
Signs of chop:
- Candles with long wicks on both sides and small bodies.
- Price repeatedly crossing a moving average without follow-through.
- ATR falling while the spread stays constant.
- Several breakouts in a row failing within minutes.
A simple chop filter measures how directional recent movement has been. Efficiency ratio is one option: the net price change over a period divided by the sum of all the individual moves. A value near 1 means a clean trend, near 0 means noise.
When the ratio drops below a threshold, the strategy stands aside. The trick is picking the threshold through testing, not feel.
An additional defence is the loss streak rule. After three losses in a row, a pause of fifteen to thirty minutes often prevents a spiral and gives the market time to change character.
Is there an objective chop filter, or is it a judgement call in the moment?
