Central bank quiet periods

Post by Shadow Trader »

Before each rate meeting, central banks enter a blackout period during which officials stop giving public comments on policy. For the Fed it starts about ten days before the meeting.

During blackout, price often becomes calmer. Without fresh speeches to react to, the market leans on data alone, and ranges tighten. Then, as the meeting approaches, positioning builds, and the day itself arrives with sharp moves.

For scalpers, the quiet stretch can be a good hunting ground for range trading, though low volatility lowers the reward relative to the spread. The risk comes at the end, when the pre-meeting positioning unwinds in a hurry.

A decent habit is to mark blackout windows on the calendar and adjust expectations: tighter targets, more range setups, fewer breakout attempts. Then step back as the meeting day draws near.

One more angle: the blackout also affects how much weight data surprises get. With no officials to soften or sharpen the message, a single strong employment or inflation print can swing rate expectations more than usual, and the reaction tends to be sharper and cleaner. That makes the quiet weeks a decent time for data-driven setups, as long as the release itself is respected with proper stops and sizing.
