What risk per trade actually means for a scalper

Post by Shadow Trader »

The standard advice says risk one percent per trade. For swing traders taking a few trades a week, that works. For scalpers taking dozens a day, it deserves rethinking.

Fifty trades a day at one percent risk each means fifty chances to lose one percent. A bad day with thirty losing trades could in theory lose thirty percent. Obviously the maths is rarely that extreme, but the exposure scales with trade count.

Many scalpers use a much smaller figure per trade, such as 0.1 to 0.25 percent, combined with a daily loss limit. The daily cap is the real control, while the per-trade risk is the fine adjustment.

A useful exercise is to simulate the worst realistic day: the longest losing streak within a day, multiplied by the risk per trade. If that number scares the account owner, the risk per trade is too high.

What does the worst realistic day cost at the current risk per trade?
