Rebuilding after a blown account

Post by Shadow Trader »

Few traders avoid it. An account hits zero, and the emotional aftermath includes shame, anger and the urge to refill and recover immediately.

That urge is the most dangerous part. Refilling quickly and trading to recoup loss repeats the very behaviour that caused the blow-up, usually with more pressure.

A more useful response begins with a pause. Several days to a few weeks away from the platform allow emotions to settle. Then comes a forensic review: what caused the loss? Oversized positions? No stop? Revenge trading? Strategy failure? Honest answers point to the fix.

Rebuilding often means going back to demo or tiny size, with stricter rules than before. The goal shifts from earning back what was lost to proving the process works.

Writing down the lessons has value. A short document titled what went wrong, with specific causes and specific countermeasures, gets read again before the next session.

What rules would have prevented the largest loss, and are they in place today?
