Journal stats that changed how I trade, and ones that didn't

Post by FXS London Scalper »

I track a lot of numbers in my journal. Looking back over the last year, only a few of them actually led to changes. Here's my honest list.

Changed something:
  • R by hour of day. Showed that trades after 11:00 London were negative, so I stopped trading after 11:00 unless there's US data.
  • MAE of winners. Showed my stops were too tight on GBPUSD, so I widened them by 1.5 pips.
  • Win rate after two consecutive losses. Dropped sharply, which led to my two-loss daily stop.
Interesting but no change:
  • Day of week. Small differences, nothing consistent.
  • Trade duration. Useful once, to set a time stop, but not since.
  • Average R per month. Too noisy to act on.
Never useful:
  • Total pips. Meaningless with different stop sizes.
  • Maximum consecutive wins.
My lesson is that a journal should answer specific questions. Collecting everything makes it harder to see the few numbers that matter.

Which stats actually changed your trading?
