Why rapid P&L swings feel like a slot machine

Post by Shadow Trader »

Scalping puts a result in front of the trader every few minutes. A win, a loss, a win, a loss. The feedback loop is fast, and fast feedback is exactly what makes certain activities hard to put down.

The mechanism is well documented in behavioural research. Rewards that arrive unpredictably, with varying size and timing, produce stronger anticipation than rewards that arrive on a fixed schedule. A trade that might win in thirty seconds triggers that anticipation again and again.

The danger is that the activity becomes about the feeling, not the edge. Entries get taken because the screen is moving, not because a setup appeared. Sessions get extended because the next trade might fix the last one.

Signs worth watching include trading more on days when nothing meets the criteria, feeling restless when flat, and checking the P&L figure more often than the chart.

A few structural defences help. Fixed trading windows. A cap on trades per session. A rule that the P&L display stays hidden or minimised during the session. Reviewing results only at the end of the day, and in weekly summaries instead of trade by trade.

Which of those signs shows up most often in your own sessions, and what has helped keep it in check?
