Multi-timeframe bars do not always line up the way you think

Post by Shadow Trader »

A five-minute bar is supposed to be built from five one-minute bars. On many platforms it is, but there are exceptions worth knowing about.

Some brokers build higher timeframe bars from their own tick data, not from the lower timeframe bars. If a tick arrives late or gets filtered on one chart but not the other, small differences appear in highs, lows, and closes.

Missing minutes in thin markets can also cause misalignment. If no tick arrives during a one-minute window, some platforms skip the bar, while others fill it with a flat candle. A five-minute bar then covers a different span of time than expected.

The practical effect is that signals based on one timeframe and confirmed on another might be slightly inconsistent, particularly in quiet markets or on exotic pairs.

For manual traders it is a minor annoyance. For automated systems it can create trades that do not match the backtest.

Checking a few bars manually, comparing a five-minute candle with the five one-minute candles beneath it, takes a minute and settles the question for a specific platform.

Another source of difference is the treatment of weekends and holidays, since some brokers build bars across the gap and others omit them. Comparing a Monday morning chart on two platforms often shows the mismatch.

Quick poll for the thread: have you ever found a mismatch between timeframes that changed a signal?
